鑑於止痛藥上癮導致死亡的案例日增，美國食品暨藥物管理局發出聲明，將緊縮麻醉止痛藥處方的開立。這項措施最快明年實施。

1999年以來，美國人因使用麻醉止痛藥或鴉片類藥物過量導致死亡人數暴增4倍，其中有約70%使用含有氫可酮（hydrocodone）的止痛藥物。

為了避免這類事件不斷發生，美國食品暨藥物管理局（FDA）將加強管制醫生最常開立的麻醉止痛藥處方，尤其是含有麻醉氫可酮（narcotic hydrocodone）成分的止痛藥，未來將和含有氧可酮（Oxycodone）、讓人容易上癮的強力止痛藥「奧施康定」（OxyContin）一樣，將都受到嚴格管制。

這項措施預計從明年起開始實施，未來病患若要服用含有上述成分的止痛藥時，必須持有醫師處方箋，才得以購買。同時，醫師處方箋的有效期也將從過去的180天內縮減為90天內。
